Unlock Tier 2 Ships Guide

Unlocking a Tier 2 hull is the first real power spike after the Landlubber. Unlocking a Tier 2+ hull — three Compass points in two compatible Principles — is the spike that lets you clear mid-tier Crown work without praying to dice. This guide covers the 1.0 launch path: Deeds, materials, crew upkeep, and which ship to build for which job.

Cross-link Deeds and journal, Naval combat, Ships tier list, and Opening route on Skull Rock.

Baseline Tier 2 versus Tier 2+

  • Baseline Tier 2 — roughly three points in the ship’s matching Principle.
  • Tier 2+three points in each of two compatible Principles. Secondary stats improve without abandoning the hull’s role.

Scattering six points across four paths unlocks nothing useful. Name the pair before you farm Deeds.

Steel EdgeEmpire + SeafaringCrown ports, defense, settlement protectionPicaroons (Rum)

Community guides also discuss Empire-leaning combat hulls such as Iron Fist as tankier alternatives depending on unlock path and patch balance — always verify the live Pier tooltip before committing materials.

Match the hull to the event objective: Gun Damage/Armor for Crown Ports, Speed for merchant chases, Manoeuvrability for smuggling, Boarding Damage for treasure caves. A strong combat hull still fails a chase card.

Infrastructure checklist before you lay the keel

  1. Pier or Shallow Pier with local Stew so builders do not walk the whole island.
  2. Salvage Dock (Empire) — about −20% build and repair cost per dock, stacking multiplicatively (two ≈ 64%, three ≈ 51%).
  3. Planks and Rope stockpiles — many Tier 2+ hulls list on the order of 50 Planks + 50 Rope.
  4. Leafcutter → Rope Maker chain near the pier warehouse.
  5. A named mission for the ship (smuggle, raid, chase, board) before spending Coin on extras.

A second Pier is often part of the cost: found a Pirate Camp that claims a Pier slot, then feed that camp locally.

Advanced crew doubles the hull

Swabbies can sail but do not raise core statistics. A full advanced crew roughly doubles Gun Damage, Boarding Damage, Speed, Manoeuvrability, and Armor. That is why crew-upkeep chains must exist before launch.

Picaroons — Rum chain

Used by Goldseeker and Steel Edge openings. A practical single-ship base:

  • 1 Woodcutter → Cooper (barrels)
  • 2 Sugar Cane Farms
  • 2 Distilleries
  • Tavern near the Pier distributing Rum

Scallywags — Cassava Bread chain

Used by Azimuth and Huracan openings:

  • Quarry + Stonecutter for Saltern / oven prerequisites
  • 2 Cassava Pickers, 1 Saltern, 2 Cassava Ovens
  • Galley distributing Cassava Bread

Stockpile upkeep, assign part of the crew, watch net consumption, then finish recruitment. A mutiny warning after launch usually began as an empty distributor.

Captains are the last layer

Swap captains at port (short cooldown) to match the next event:

  • Teach — Health / Gun Damage for Crown work
  • Kanja — Supplies / Speed for long chases
  • Scarlet — Health / Boarding
  • Honorata (Honora) — Speed / Manoeuvrability

Captains do not replace a missing hull stat. Hover actions in combat — dice modify chance moments; objectives run on ship numbers. Full explainers live in Naval combat and Captains tier list.

Farming the points

Prioritize Deeds on your two target Principles. Use repeatable Crown Ports and smuggling runs when cooldowns allow and the home cove is green. Keep a Landlubber on Tier 1 work until both Principles hit three — upgrading early into the wrong hull wastes Rope.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do I unlock Tier 2 ships in Corsair Cove?

Earn about three Compass points in the matching Principle via Deeds, prepare Pier materials, then construct the hull. Tier 2+ needs three points in each of two Principles.

Which Tier 2+ ship is best first?

Steel Edge (Empire + Seafaring) is a strong Crown-defense pick. Choose Goldseeker, Azimuth, or Huracan if your story objectives and Principle pair already lean that way.

Do Swabbies count as a full crew?

They can sail, but advanced crews are what roughly double core ship statistics. Recruit them only when upkeep goods are stocked.

What does the Salvage Dock do?

Each dock cuts ship build and repair costs by about 20%, stacking multiplicatively across multiple docks.

Why did my new ship lose despite good dice?

Objectives use hull stats for the job type. A slow destroyer fails chase cards; hover the action and match Speed, Gun, Manoeuvrability, or Boarding.
